Composer of the Week: Georg Philipp Telemann Bar

Composer of the Week: Georg Philipp Telemann Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann was born March 24, 1681 in Magdeburg, now a part of modern day Germany. Telemann first received music lessons at the age of 10 learning the organ and composition from a local musician. From a young age he became a multi-instrumentalist, teaching himself how to play the flute, oboe, violin, viola de gambe, recorder, double bass, and a number of other instruments. As was common of the time Telemann worked for a number of rich aristocratic families around Europe throughout his life, but it was during his time in Eisenach while working for Duke Johann Wilhelm he wrote a large number of pieces such as a number of cycles of church cantatas, as well as dozens of sonatas and concertos. In 1714 he was living in Frankfurt which was the location for some of his most successful writing. Telemann’s first published works come from this time as well as a set of 6 sonatas for Violin called the "Frankfurt Sonatas", as well as his "Viola Concerto in G Major". During an 8 month trip to Paris in 1737 Telemann heard an opera by Jean-Phillipe Rameau, which greatly influenced the composer. Following the trip Telemann incorporated the French operatic style into his own vocal writing. It is believed Telemann wrote over 3,000 compositions during his life, although many have been lost. Telemann died on June 25th, 1767 from a chest ailment. Composer of the Week: Björk @bjork Avant-garde

Composer of the Week: Björk @bjork Avant-garde singer and composer Björk was born on November 21, 1965 in Reykjavik, Iceland. At the age of 6 she enrolled in the Icelandic music school Barnamúsíkskóli where she studied classical piano and flute. Following a performance at a school recital a recording of her singing was sent to a record label, which ended up offering her a recording contract in 1976. At the age of 11 Björk released her first album, self-titled Björk. As a teenager she formed a number of different bands with friends, among them the groups Spit and Snot, Exodus, and Tappi Tikarrass. Throughout her career Björk has become known for her unique singing style, often combining traditional singing styles with whispers and shouts. By the mid 1980’s Björk moved on to a new group called the Sugarcubes, and with them released a number of albums, however by 1992 the group had broken up and Björk returned to being a solo artist. Her first large international hit was “Human Behavior” which sampled a guitar rhythm by Antônio Carlos Jobim. For the next 3 decades she has gone on to release a number of successful albums branching across many different musical styles such as electronic dance music, jazz, alternative rock, instrumental, and classical contemporary music. Composer of the Week: Domenico Scarlatti Italian

Composer of the Week: Domenico Scarlatti Italian Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti was born October 26th, 1685 in Naples, Italy. The son of prominent composer Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico received his earliest musical training from his father. It is believed that he also received instruction from Gaetano Greco, Francesco Gasparini, and Bernardo Pasquini. Scarlatti spent most of his early life in Naples, and little is known about him from that time, although he was appointed the organist for the Chapel Royal of Naples in 1701 and worked under his father at that time. He was sent to Venice around 1703 and nothing more is known until 1709 when it shows he moved to Rome. He wrote some of his earliest keyboard and harpsichord works while living in Rome. In 1719 Scarlatti left Italy and traveled to London to direct his opera “Narciso”. That same year he arrived in Lisbon, Portugal. He would spend the remainder of his life in Portugal and Spain. While living in Spain he worked for Princess Maria Barbara, who went on to become the Queen of Spain. Throughout his life Scarlatti wrote 555 sonatas for harpsichord or keyboard. Many of these sonatas are single movement works that rely on the building of density of notes to portray intensity. His later works showed the shift in musical styling, having a more “classical” sound to them and using the new sonata form that was becoming popular in music of that time. During his time living in Spain it is also believed that Scarlatti was influenced by the sounds of the Spanish guitar and incorporated it into his music through the use of repeated notes. Scarlatti died on July 23rd, 1757 while living in Madrid. The home he lived in was designated with a historical plaque, with the descendants of his family still living in Madrid today. He was buried at a convent in the city, but his grave no longer exists. Happy Halloween! 💀🎃👻 Check out this performance of ‘Danse Macabre’ by Camille Saint-Saëns, arranged for 2-pianos, 8-hands, performed by our Piano Faculty at our 10 Year Anniversary Gala! ‘Danse Macabre’ is based on a myth where, according to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle. His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. #music #piano #dansemacabre #musiced #musicschool #musiced #musiceducation

Composer of the Week: Reena Esmail @reenaesmail

Composer of the Week: Reena Esmail @reenaesmail Indian- American composer Reena Esmail was born February 11, 1983 in Los Angeles, CA. Esmail is a multi-faceted composer, evenly splitting her compositions between orchestral, choral, and chamber writing. She holds numerous music degrees, earning her Bachelors in Music from the The Juilliard School, as well as a Masters in Music, Masters in Musical Arts, Doctorate in Musical Arts all from the Yale School of Music. Through her years of studies she has trained with teachers such as Susan Botti, Aaron Jay Kearnis, and Samuel Adler. Esmail has served as the composer-in-residence for major American groups such as the Seattle Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, Spoleto Festival, and most recently was named the artist-in-residence for the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Her music and doctoral thesis delves into the world of combining the sounds and traditions of Hindustani music with Western classical music, as well as the challenges presented from the collaboration of musicians from these two different musical traditions. Notable pieces in Esmail’s current music catalog include “Black Iris” (retitled “#metoo”), “Meri Sakhi Ki Avaaz”, and “Say Your Name”. Esmail continues to live in Los Angeles and is actively working to expand her compositional output.
